“East vs West – The battle of the Donair”
A debate as old as the Donair! Should Donairs contain lettuce? Well it depends on who you ask. Loyal Halifaxers who grew up with the Donair originating in their province think you shouldn’t. To them, it’s completely blasphemy to add that crunchy green vegetable on top of your Donair. Their perfect Donair consists of Donair meat, sweet sauce, onions and tomato. Nothing more, nothing less. However the west side of our beautiful country feels very different,
“I couldn’t eat a Donair without lettuce myself,” says Adil Asim, the founder of PrimeTime Donair & Poutine. “People want to try something new. In Edmonton, we do things a little different.”
Just how different? Well in Edmonton, A Donair without lettuce is rare to see. Not only that, but Edmontonions have adapted other various toppings to put on top of their Donair. Ranging from peppers, cucumbers to even pineapples. “At PrimeTime Donair, we’ve even invented a new concept. The PrimeTime Flavours. Where we sautee your Donair meat over an open flame using one of our signature flavours. This concept makes Halifaxers very skeptical at first, but after they try our spin on the traditional Donair, they leave believers with a changed mind. That’s what it’s all about, bringing together both East and West concepts to connect us Donair lovers instead of divide.”
At PrimeTime, some of our very best customers are Maritimers. Halifax is where the great food that is the Donair originates from, and we will always pay respect and homage to the East Coast for that reason.
The way we view it, if you go to Italy and order a Pizza, it will be completely different than a Pizza you order from Chicago, or in New York.. but nevertheless they are still delicious variations of Pizza. So whether you like lettuce on your Donair or not, we can all agree that Donair is a delicious addition to Canadian cuisine and the future of Donair in Canada is bright!
